Hello Everyone,
We have joined forces to with several groups in the region to have this fun event. Hope to see you there!
We will be converging on Stauton River State Park (beach area). They have picnic tables for resting and grills for cooking. A few of us Loons will be prviding ice and charcoal for a afternoon picnic. We will be firing up the grills at noon. BYOFD Bring Your Own Food Drink. There is also camping at the park that you will have to contact the park to make reservations. http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/cabgen.shtml
We hope many of you will join us in this paddle in event. There are many areas to launch your canoe/kayak and paddle over to the park for lunch. It is up to you to pick your route. Here are some ideas...
A – Staunton River US 360 VGIF Boat Access – A very bucolic paddle down the Staunton and around the point to the picnic Beach (south shore) 12.4 miles – little to no current assist
B – Staunton View Launch – If its really hot this launch site offers easy access from the east. You can easily extend the paddle by exploring the islands and flats at the mouth of the Staunton river
C – Arron’s Creek – right off Hwy 58, this launch offers a moderate paddle to the Dan and on to the Picnic Beach
D – Hyco River – Also off Hwy 58, this launch offers a pretty paddle out to the Dan and then multiple route options to the picnic beach
E - South Boston Water Intake launch - I am least familiar with this one but the DRBA and Halifax folks say it is a good launch point
F – Banister River Wolf Trap – pull up Google Earth or get your County Road maps out to find this one. Enjoy paddling to the Banister-Dan confluence and then on to picnic beach.
We will have a special guest for this event from Frog Hollow Outdoors, Banks Dixon. Banks will be teaching water rescue and answering some of you kayaking and canoe questions.
